What is a Non-Adherent Dressing

Non-Adherent dressings are wound dressings that are specifically designed to not stick to healing wounds when they are applied. These types of dressing are perfect for wounds that have moderate to light secretion from the active wound, and should not be used for wounds that produce heavy exudate.

It is extremely common for non-adherent dressings to have additional substances added to the wound-facing portion of the dressing, such as hyrdogel and antiseptic substances that will ultimately improve the healing process.

Types of Non-Adherent Dressings

There are two very common types of non-adherent dressing types, with the synthetic option being much more common than the other. Types of non-adherent dressings include:

  • Synthetic non-woven gauze dressings: usually made from a rayon/polyester material including a cellulose layer that is fluid absorbent
  • Cotton based woven gauze dressing with non-adherent film: Usually a non-adherent polyester outer layer film with a woven cotton bed to promote drainage of the wound.

The synthetic version of non-adherent dressing is usually the top choice for many medical professionals, as the occurrence as lint/debris is much less probable compared to their cotton based woven counterparts.
