Tegaderm Transparent Film Dressing – Picture Frame Style

3M Health Care is now Solventum. The same products you know and trust, now under a new brand.

Tegaderm Transparent Film Dressings are designed to create a moist wound healing environment as a primary or secondary dressing, as a skin protector, and for covering catheter and IV sites. Once in place, this dressing assists with autolytic debridement. The construction of Tegaderm Transparent Film Dressings is rooted in research stretching back to the 1970s that examines the role of dressings in wound healing. As a result, Tegaderm Transparent Film helps mimic healthy skin, offering semi-permeable construction for moisture management without allowing bacteria and viruses to pass through. At the same time, the flexible, see-through material moves with the body and lets you observe the wound’s healing to accurately schedule dressing changes.

Precautions

  • Do not use the dressing as a replacement for sutures and other primary wound closure methods.
  • Stop any bleeding at the site before applying the dressing.
  • Make sure the skin is clean, free of soap residue and lotion and allowed to dry thoroughly before applying the dressing to prevent skin irritation and to ensure good adhesion.
  • The dressing may be used on an infected site, only when under the care of a health care professional.
  • Antimicrobial ointments containing polyethylene glycols may compromise the strength of the Tegaderm™.
  • Tegaderm™ Transparent Dressings should not be re-sterilized by gamma, E-beam, or steam methods
  • Do not stretch the dressing during application as tension can cause skin trauma. Applying an adhesive product with tension can produce mechanical trauma to the skin. Stretching can also cause adhesion failure.

How to Use Tegaderm Transparent Film Dressing – Picture Frame Style

  1. Prepare the catheter insertion site or wound according to your institution’s approval protocol. Allow all antiseptics and skin protectants to completely dry to prevent skin irritation and to ensure good adhesion.
  2. Select a dressing size that will adequately cover the catheter and insertion site or wound. Ensure at least a one inch margin of dressing adheres to healthy, dry skin.
  3. To ensure good adhesion, clip excess hair where the dressing will be placed. Do not shave the skin because of the potential for microabrasions.
  4. Peel the liner from the dressing. Turn over so the adhesive faces the skin.
  5. Be careful not to stretch the dressing at placement. Apply firm pressure to the entire dressing starting over the gel pad to enhance adhesion.
  6. Apply pressure to securement border with one hand, while removing paper frame with opposite hand.
  7. Remove notched tape strip from paper frame. Orient the notch towards the dressing and apply the tape strip under the extension tubing and over the dressing border. Remove adhesive-free tabs.
  8. Change every 7 days, when the dressing becomes loose or soiled or in cases where there is swelling, visible drainage, or lost visbility.

Removal

  1. Using a low and slow removal technique, start removing the dressing from where the catheter or tubing exits the dressing toward the catheter insertion site. Avoid skin trauma by peeling the dressing back, rather than pulling it up from the skin.
  2. If needed, a medical adhesive solvent can be used to help remove the dressing border. Continue the low and slow removal until the dressing is completely removed.

Common Question(s) About Tegaderm Transparent Film Dressing – Picture Frame Style

What is the wear time on Tegaderm Film?

Transparent dressings can be safely left on perpheral venous catheters for the duration of catheter insertion without increasing the risk for thromnophlebitis.

Replace dressings used on short-term CVC sites every 2 days for gauze dressings and at least every 7 days for transparent dressings, except in those pediatric patients in which the risk for dislodging the catheter outweighs the benefit of changing the dressing.

For wounds, leave on as long as possible until the dressing becomes compromised (i.e. edge lift, rolls, or soiled) to prevent disruption of the healing process. Dressing generally changed when fluid is “excessive”, dressing is loose, or routinely at 7 days.
