HYCOL

First is HYCOL Hydrolyzed Collagen. This may sound familiar if you’ve read our September blog on collagen. Like other products mentioned there, HYCOL is designed to assist in the wound healing process of stubborn wounds by using animal proteins.  HYCOL is Type 1 bovine hydrolyzed collagen fragments that are 1/100^th the size of native collagen.  With HYCOL, the body does not have to break it down, so the benefits of collagen are provided to the wound immediately.  Sanara’s version is an additive-free powder, providing the patient with collagen that’s versatile, safe and effective.

Why is powder a good choice? The key is to think in terms of all the possible uses for collagen. Think of all the locations and possible shapes and sizes of serious skin traumas. Powder can be sprinkled into deep wounds or evenly spread across a long, wide first or second degree burn. It can also be used with any kind of cover dressing, be it a thin hydrocolloid or a thick, absorbent foam. Compared to an impregnated dressing or even a dissolving collagen disc, powder has the edge in terms of versatility.

BIAKŌS

Perhaps a more unique product to us is BIAKŌS Antimicrobial Skin & Wound Cleanser. BIAKŌS is much more than just a skin cleanser. In contrast to most standard saline cleansers, which merely flush out a would, BIAKŌS is designed to not only clean, but help heal. In fact, we’ll let Sanara’s own words, from their recent BIAKŌS press release, speak for themselves:

BIAKŌS is an FDA-cleared and patented composition that effectively disrupts extracellular polymeric substances to eradicate biofilm microbes. BIAKŌS is intended for mechanical removal of debris, dirt, foreign materials, and microorganisms from wounds including stage I-IV pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, post-surgical wounds, first and second-degree burns as well as grafted and donor sites. BIAKŌS is effective in killing free-floating microbes, immature, and mature bacterial biofilms such as MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and fungal biofilms such as Candida albicans. In addition, BIAKŌS safety studies show that it is non-cytotoxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing to healthy skin and assists in the normal wound healing process.

All of this is a fancy way of saying that, in addition to blasting a wound clean of dirt of debris, BIAKŌS actually helps to kill bacteria and fungus that may be infecting the wound while simultaneously having no adverse effect on healthy skin. It’s a perfect product for someone with a healing wound that needs to be kept both clean and disinfected. And unlike saline-based products, BIAKŌS actually has a shelf life. Because of its antimicrobial properties, there’s no danger of contamination after the seal is broken, making it in most cases a much more frugal option comparatively, despite its higher price tag.
